DESCRIPTION:They’re right under our noses yet we don’t notice them. Some just listen but others might be transmitting as you read this\, perhaps even in code. They might not use the internet or phone to communicate with each other\, and they’re often found in backyard shacks. \nHave you noticed strange antennae as you walk around your neighbourhood? Should you be afraid? \nWell\, they’re not quite the aliens of a B-grade 1960s movie\, but they are a subculture of intelligent beings that is relatively invisible to most of us. \nThese are the HAM radio enthusiasts who communicate across the world by high frequency (short wave) radio by bouncing signals off the ionosphere. Some have even been known to bounce them off the Moon. \nRadio and astronomy have gone hand-in-hand for a very long time\, with Australia home to some of the most impressive radiotelescopes in the world. SUMMARY:Author Talk with Professor Peter Doherty
DESCRIPTION:Professor Peter Doherty was awarded Australian of the year in 1997 and is the first person with a Veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize. He has authored several books including The Beginners Guide to Winning a Nobel Prize\, The Knowledge Wars and the Incidental Tourist. \n  \n  \nPeter Doherty shared the 1996 Nobel Medicine Prize with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel\, for their discoveries about transplantation and “killer” T cell-mediated immunity\, an understanding that is currently translating into new cancer treatments. \nThe first veterinarian to win a Nobel\, he was Australian of the Year in 1997. Still active in research on immunity to influenza\, he commutes between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital\, Memphis and the Peter Doherty Institute at the University of Melbourne\, where he now spends most of his professional time. \nApart from his scientific output that can be found on PubMed\, he is the author of several “lay” books\, including A Light History of Hot Air\, The Beginners Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize\, Sentinel Chickens: What Birds Tell us About our Health and our World and Pandemics: What Everyone Needs to Know. \nPassionate about promoting an evidence-based view of reality\, his most recent book The Knowledge Wars is a “warts and all” view of science for non-scientists\, even for people who don’t like science. It also suggests how any thoughtful citizen can bypass the facile propagandists and probe the scientific evidence for and against some of the big issues\, like climate change or GM foods. \n

DESCRIPTION:Of our eight finalists\, only four will win the first prize of $1\,000 for their respective categories\, with the runners-up receiving $500. \nTo foster and recognise excellence in Victoria’s early career scientists\, the Royal Society of Victoria has established four prestigious competitive prizes open to Victorian students in their final year of doctoral candidature\, in all areas of the Biomedical & Health Sciences\, Biological Sciences (Non-human)\, Earth Sciences and Physical Sciences. \nFollowing assessment of applications across the four categories\, eight finalists will be selected to present their work to our audience. Of the eight finalists\, only four will win the first prize of $1000 for their respective categories. \nEach of the short-listed candidates will be required to give a 15 minute oral presentation before a general audience. In addition to the merits of their scientific work\, finalists will be judged on their ability to make their work accessible and interesting to an audience uninitiated in their field of endeavour. \nWinners will be announced at a special function following the presentations at the Royal Society of Victoria’s Hall.

The Artificial Intelligence Collaborative Network (AICN) will host an entertaining evening which will inform and educate people about the emerging debates in the field of the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI). SUMMARY:Saving Species with Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:Anyone can contribute to science\, regardless of their age or experience. \nJoin BioQuisitive and Science For All at Monash Tech School for this hands on workshop about how everyday citizens are working to protect critically endangered species using DNA and other advanced technologies. \nScience For All and BioQuisitive are currently monitoring three endangered species\, one of which is the Leadbeater Possum\, the focus of this workshop. Using a variety of different technologies\, they’re training members of the public to work like a forensics team; going out into the field\, collecting samples\, and using their mobile lab to analyse the results. Working with partners such as the Australian National University\, they’re identifying where these possums live in order to help map out their homes and inform evidence-based policies for protecting these species and their habitats. These technologies include thermal imaging cameras\, DNA thermal cyclers\, centrifuges\, and more. \nObservation and data collection is the core of the scientific method. Science for All has values which recognise that knowledge takes many forms – this includes people who are subject area experts\, people with traditional\, indigenous or local knowledge\, and those with big dreams and big ideas. All are welcome to this workshop\, no matter how much lab experience you have.

DESCRIPTION:Do you take food for granted? Recipe for Disaster\, an interactive performative dinner experiment in the iconic ‘Mad Max’ South Lawn Car Park\, which will compel you to consider this question closely. \nFood has the capacity to bring us together. It’s familiar\, relational and cultural. In times of conflict and scarcity\, it also has the capacity to tear us apart. How food secure are you? \nIn a world with increasing ecological degradation and greater disparities between the rich and poor\, food security is of increasing global concern…a food fight to avoid. In Australia we are distracted\, choking and bloated on misinformation and choice about food\, which in itself is a recipe for ruin. \nRecipe for Disaster is an interactive performative dinner experiment in the iconic ‘Mad Max’ South Lawn Car Park. This meal will not be your conventional sit-down hoity-toity dinner\, nor is it dystopian in its approach. Instead\, it will be a mash-up of food courses\, movements and provocations from four food experts – a speculative journey and ‘palaver’ into the future to explore how our myths\, anxieties\, pleasures\, conveniences and comforts around food and diets in the context of a climate/everything change future. This is not catering. SUMMARY:Psychtalks stories from the cosmos: What Indigenous storytelling can teach us about memory\, our highways and ourselves
DESCRIPTION:For over 65\,000 years\, the night’s sky has served as a map for Indigenous peoples all around the world. Aboriginal Australians plotted the absence and presence of stars to develop celestial maps for navigation to survive the harsh Australian landscape. In doing so\, Aboriginal Australians built complex knowledge systems using signals from the sky and the landscape to recall and pass on significant knowledge\, cultural values and wisdom. \n\nThe oral tradition of dreaming and songlines are deeply tied to the Australian landscape and night’s sky\, and this form of communication has endured phenomenally with memories being passed down from generation to generation to safeguard an encyclopaedic memory of water holes\, walking routes and thousands of species of plants and animals across Australia. \n\nCultures around the world have long grouped stars into familiar patterns. Curiously\, many of these constellations are perceived in strikingly similar ways\, despite the cultures being geographically and temporally separated. Could this have something to do with psychological pattern recognition? And can we use the same method to encode our own memories in the modern world?
