SUMMARY:Recipe for Disaster
DESCRIPTION:Do you take food for granted? Recipe for Disaster\, an interactive performative dinner experiment in the iconic ‘Mad Max’ South Lawn Car Park\, which will compel you to consider this question closely. \nFood has the capacity to bring us together. It’s familiar\, relational and cultural. In times of conflict and scarcity\, it also has the capacity to tear us apart. How food secure are you? \nIn a world with increasing ecological degradation and greater disparities between the rich and poor\, food security is of increasing global concern…a food fight to avoid. In Australia we are distracted\, choking and bloated on misinformation and choice about food\, which in itself is a recipe for ruin. \nRecipe for Disaster is an interactive performative dinner experiment in the iconic ‘Mad Max’ South Lawn Car Park. This meal will not be your conventional sit-down hoity-toity dinner\, nor is it dystopian in its approach. Instead\, it will be a mash-up of food courses\, movements and provocations from four food experts – a speculative journey and ‘palaver’ into the future to explore how our myths\, anxieties\, pleasures\, conveniences and comforts around food and diets in the context of a climate/everything change future. This is not catering. Food will be experienced\, and expectations may be disrupted and/or savoured. \nNOTE to participants: Due to the nature of the experiment\, food allergies can be catered to with advanced notice\, but unfortunately not food preferences.

SUMMARY:Save the Bees
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear about the importance of Bees in our world. Founder of Save the Bees Australia – Bee The Cure\, Simon Mulvany is an ex ranger\, gardener and beekeeper who has made it his mission to educate people about the plight of the precious pollinators\, both indigenous and introduced. \nBees have been humanities greatest companion for the last 10 000 years. Bees share the same taste as us being attracted to the perfumes and flowers that we are. As plants don’t have legs they enlisted bees to do the pollination through beauty and fragrance. Modern farming practices are stressing bees and the world is seeing major collapses in honeybee populations. If bees thrive so does the human race. Through pollination bees provide food for humanity.

SUMMARY:Psychtalks stories from the cosmos: What Indigenous storytelling can teach us about memory\, our highways and ourselves
DESCRIPTION:For over 65\,000 years\, the night’s sky has served as a map for Indigenous peoples all around the world. Aboriginal Australians plotted the absence and presence of stars to develop celestial maps for navigation to survive the harsh Australian landscape. In doing so\, Aboriginal Australians built complex knowledge systems using signals from the sky and the landscape to recall and pass on significant knowledge\, cultural values and wisdom. \n\nThe oral tradition of dreaming and songlines are deeply tied to the Australian landscape and night’s sky\, and this form of communication has endured phenomenally with memories being passed down from generation to generation to safeguard an encyclopaedic memory of water holes\, walking routes and thousands of species of plants and animals across Australia. \n\nCultures around the world have long grouped stars into familiar patterns. Curiously\, many of these constellations are perceived in strikingly similar ways\, despite the cultures being geographically and temporally separated. Could this have something to do with psychological pattern recognition? And can we use the same method to encode our own memories in the modern world?

SUMMARY:UMWELTEN - Eco-fields and other Universes
DESCRIPTION:Felicity Spear\, in her exhibition Umwelten – eco-fields and other universes\, has created circular paintings on wood\, encircled by profiles of the human skull. They are speculations about the possibilities for other habitats or other universes beyond our sensorium at either a micro or macro level. \nIn 1909\, the biologist Jakob von Uexküll introduced the concept of the umwelt to describe the small subset of the world which an animal is able to detect. This word expresses a simple but often overlooked observation; different animals in the same ecosystem tune in to different environmental signals which are fundamental to their communication and signification. While we accept the reality of the world with which we’re presented\, so much goes undetected in our lives. \nOur sensorium is enough to get by in our ecosystem\, but is does not approximate the larger picture. The more science taps into the hidden channels of the electromagnetic spectrum\, the more it becomes clear that our brains are tuned to detect a surprisingly small fraction of the surrounding reality. So the idea of the umwelt also captures the idea of unseen possibilities. Spear’s paintings map an eco-field of umwelten\, creating a possible ecosystem of other universes.
