SUMMARY:Psychtalks stories from the cosmos: What Indigenous storytelling can teach us about memory\, our highways and ourselves
DESCRIPTION:For over 65\,000 years\, the night’s sky has served as a map for Indigenous peoples all around the world. Aboriginal Australians plotted the absence and presence of stars to develop celestial maps for navigation to survive the harsh Australian landscape. In doing so\, Aboriginal Australians built complex knowledge systems using signals from the sky and the landscape to recall and pass on significant knowledge\, cultural values and wisdom. \n\nThe oral tradition of dreaming and songlines are deeply tied to the Australian landscape and night’s sky\, and this form of communication has endured phenomenally with memories being passed down from generation to generation to safeguard an encyclopaedic memory of water holes\, walking routes and thousands of species of plants and animals across Australia. \n\nCultures around the world have long grouped stars into familiar patterns. Curiously\, many of these constellations are perceived in strikingly similar ways\, despite the cultures being geographically and temporally separated. Could this have something to do with psychological pattern recognition? And can we use the same method to encode our own memories in the modern world?

SUMMARY:Meteorites
DESCRIPTION:Meteorites: Where they come from\, the different types and some famous impacts.  The talk will be illustrated with some real meteorites that can be viewed and handled after the talk.  You will be amazed where some meteorites come from and you will definitely want to take a picture holding something “out of this world” \nBiography \nTrevor Hand has been a regular presenter at public star gazing events for the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society (MPAS) in Victoria\, Australia\, for ten years and has been an invited guest speaker at several other astronomical societies and radio stations.  More recently\, he has made a number of appearances as an enrichment speaker on cruise ships in the Australia and New Zealand regions.  He has a broad knowledge of all things astronomical and is particularly well known for his “hands on” presentations\, using his collection of meteorites and space memorabilia to add a touch of “reality” to his talks. \nBookings open on Tuesday 30 July. \nImage credit: Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History\, Washington DC\, USA

SUMMARY:UMWELTEN - Eco-fields and other Universes
DESCRIPTION:Felicity Spear\, in her exhibition Umwelten – eco-fields and other universes\, has created circular paintings on wood\, encircled by profiles of the human skull. They are speculations about the possibilities for other habitats or other universes beyond our sensorium at either a micro or macro level. \nIn 1909\, the biologist Jakob von Uexküll introduced the concept of the umwelt to describe the small subset of the world which an animal is able to detect. This word expresses a simple but often overlooked observation; different animals in the same ecosystem tune in to different environmental signals which are fundamental to their communication and signification. While we accept the reality of the world with which we’re presented\, so much goes undetected in our lives. \nOur sensorium is enough to get by in our ecosystem\, but is does not approximate the larger picture. The more science taps into the hidden channels of the electromagnetic spectrum\, the more it becomes clear that our brains are tuned to detect a surprisingly small fraction of the surrounding reality. So the idea of the umwelt also captures the idea of unseen possibilities. Spear’s paintings map an eco-field of umwelten\, creating a possible ecosystem of other universes.

Parents to be invited in for the day and participate in activities. \nSet up four activities in Periods 3\, 4\, 5\, 6.  Each group to do every activity once\, and rotate around. \nDoing activities will require breaking into pairs or groups of 3-4 in each period. \nActivities are as follows: \n\nConstruction Contest – to build the tallest stable structure from materials supplied (straws\, cardboard tubes\, string\, tape etc). Measure the heights of the successful free standing structure. Tablulate the results.\nIt’s a small world after all – explore the history of microscopes\, set up and demonstrate with a variety of objects to view. Include magnifying glasses\, stereo and monocular microscopes\, digital microscopes etc. Learn about the Biology of cells.\nChemistry – Make slime (something to take home) and oobleck.\nGeology and fossils – examine specimens of rocks and minerals. Fossil bones hidden in a sand box to find. Make models of dinosaurs (buy kits). Make fossil casts using plaster of paris.

SUMMARY:The Future of Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to campaigns like The War on Waste\, plastic has become public enemy number one. Plastic waste is indeed a global environmental – and potentially health – problem\, requiring us to change long-held wasteful habits\, alongside significant political will and innovative solutions. But what of the other side to plastic – its astonishing variety of form and uses\, from electronics to transport to buildings to emerging renewable energy solutions? Do we need to give plastic the flick for good or do we just need to be smarter about the kinds of plastics we produce\, and how\, where\, and what we use them for? \nWe are hosting panelists from a mix of backgrounds with expertise in key sub-themes of this\, including: \n\nThe long-term environmental impacts of plastic\nPotential solutions to the plastic waste problem\nNew and emerging plastics and applications\nHealth risks from plastics
