SUMMARY:Textual data sonification and algorithmic composition competition
DESCRIPTION:The Textual Data Sonification and Algorithmic Composition Competition challenges participants to write computer programs that translate text into data\, allocate data to specific sounds in the form of music notes (‘data sonification’)\, and then turn those notes into sheet music. The ultimate aim is to create a computer program that can use any text to generate a cappella vocal scores for soprano\, alto\, tenor and bass singers. \nThe competition will culminate with a vocal performance at RMIT University during National Science Week where winning and shortlisted entries will be demonstrated using text data provided by the audience\, and performed by singers with excellent sight reading skills. \nFurther details\, including competition rules\, are available online.

SUMMARY:R.U.R. 2020
DESCRIPTION:In the near future\, a young scientist responsible for a world-changing medical breakthrough uncovers a corporate conspiracy that could spell the end of one species – and the rise of another. A reimagination of Karel Capek’s classic sci-fi thriller\, performed in a real-life laboratory. \n“I have seen a new generation of man being stitched together like so many patchwork quilts in an unending line. They will make Einsteins for pennies and dimes; Napoleons by the bundle; and new creatures that have no parallel on the Earth.” \nAlmost a century has passed since Czech playwright Karel Capek wrote Rossum’s Universal Robots\, a provocative sci-fi satire depicting the creation and inevitable rebellion of a race of artificial humans – the first ‘robots’. \nToday we are surrounded by real life robots\, and fears of human redundancy abound. Meanwhile\, in our hospitals and in our bodies\, incredible new technologies promise miracle cures that blur the boundary between the natural and the artificial. \nHosted live in the labs of BioFab3D\, one of Australia’s top medical research facilities\, RUR 2020 reimagines Capek’s controversial classic for the new century. The first robots will be flesh and blood. \nProduced by BioFab3D and PlayReactive. \nPost-show forums on Thursday 9 and 16 August.

SUMMARY:Art of Science Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute’s annual Art of Science exhibition showcases stunning images and videos captured by Australian medical researchers tackling some of the biggest challenges facing global health. \nTaking place during National Science Week\, the Art of Science exhibition runs from 10 – 19 August 2018 at Melbourne’s Federation Square. The experience shines a light on biomedical exploration and discovery traversing the vast and complex research areas of cancer\, infectious diseases and immune disorders. \nSee how blood vessels sprout from a piece of bone grown in the laboratory; watch breast cancer cells ‘caught on camera’ as they attempt to run riot in other parts of the body; and be unsettled by a writhing parasite ‘playground’ captured under the microscope with an iPhone. \nDirector of the Institute\, Professor Doug Hilton said Art of Science was like a ‘backstage pass’ into the laboratory revealing how medical researchers worked to better understand\, prevent and treat disease. \n“The images and videos in our Art of Science exhibition provide magnificent insight into the challenges our biomedical researchers are working to address – whether that’s stopping aggressive cancers from spreading in the body; finding ways to outsmart the malaria mosquito; or pinpointing what is going awry in development where birth defects such as spina bifida and cleft palate occur\,” Professor Hilton said. \nProfessor Hilton said the exhibition offered a unique opportunity for the public to grasp how rapid advances in medical imaging technology were enabling researchers to visualise the unseeable in impressive detail. \n“Visitors to the exhibition get the chance to see what blood vessels look like when they migrate to form conduits that transport food\, oxygen and germ-fighting immune cells throughout the body. \n“They’ll also see a life-size snapshot of breast tissue\, resembling blossoms at the end of a stem\, that in reality is no bigger than a few grains of rice\,” Professor Hilton said. \nInstitute staff and scientists will be in The Atrium at Federation Square between 10am-6pm throughout the exhibition period\, to show visitors around and answer their questions. \nA time-honoured competition \nThe Art of Science exhibition is also a showcase of 20 finalists from the Institute’s annual Art of Science competition\, which was founded in 1997 by former Institute director Professor Suzanne Cory. \nThis year\, our esteemed panel of judges is from Museums Victoria and includes CEO Lynley Marshall; Senior Curator for Human Biology and Medicine Johanna Simkin; and Collections Curator for Engineering Matilda Vaughan. \n“My selection was made on the basis of artistic appeal\, representation of subject matter and the degree to which the image engaged me with the subject\,” Ms Marshall said. \nThe public also get to have their say. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to vote for their favourite image in the ever popular People’s Choice Awards for the chance to win a framed print of their choice.

SUMMARY:Eggs Alive!
DESCRIPTION:Kangaroo Flat Library (Goldfields Libraries) is excited to announce that for National Science Week from the 13 – 21 August we are presenting “Eggs Alive!” Goldfields Libraries is a successful SEED grant winner and would like to share this whole experiment with the community. \nWith the money from the SEED grant\, Kangaroo Flat Library was able to purchase an incubator and brooder. The “Eggs Alive!” project will hatch fertilised chicken eggs in a see-through incubator at Kangaroo Flat Library during National Science Week. \nThe newly hatched chicks will then be kept in a brooder under a heat lamp in the Library for just over a week\, allowing the public to learn about the scientific aspects of the life cycle of chickens by observing\, discussing and supervised holding of the chicks during opening hours. \nThe actual hatching will be filmed in time-lapse\, which will then be shown on a loop near the chicks during this time\, allowing people to see the hatching occurring if they missed it. \nOn Wednesday 15 August at 2pm we have a guest speaker from the Bendigo Poultry Club\, Graeme Smith. Graeme is a poultry breeder of more than 48 years and is an “All Breeds” poultry judge for chicken exhibitions. Graeme will bring in a couple of adult birds for everyone to have a look at during his chat. He will discuss “showing birds”\, rare breeds and how old breeds are being re-established through genetics and science\, and general care and wellbeing of poultry. Any queries or questions by the public are welcomed at this informal session. \nWe hope with this experiment the community will learn more about poultry and the different sciences that are involved with hatching eggs such as biology (the life cycle of a chicken)\, climate (setting the temperature and incubator humidity) and Ecology and Agriculture (the benefits of eggs and meat and reduction in kitchen waste). \nStorytimes during National Science Week will have a special chicken-inspired theme and people can also browse our poultry-themed library items on display. Kangaroo Flat Library staff can also provide feedback on the whole egg incubation process to people who might be interested in trying to hatch eggs themselves!

SUMMARY:Truth is Stranger than Science Fiction - a NASA Scientist Tells
DESCRIPTION:People speculated about the existence of planets orbiting other Suns for hundreds if not thousands of years before they were finally confirmed. That gap left a lot of time for science fiction writers to invent their own words – mysterious planets with exotic landscapes\, orbiting alien star systems. When our technology finally caught up with our imaginations\, what we found was even more extraordinary than we had imagined. As science curator at the NASA Exoplanet Archive\, Dr Jessie Christiansen will take you on a tour of some of the more fantastic exoplanet discoveries\, including some famous\, fan-favourite fictional planets brought to life. \nAstrophysicist Dr Jessie Christiansen has been called the “Tomb Raider of exoplanet research”. Working at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at Caltech\, Jessie searchers for\, studies and catalogues extrasolar planets – plants orbiting other stars. Her main research focuses on using the thousands of exoplanets found by the NASA Kepler mission to determine how common Earth-like planets might be in our galaxy. She is currently working on the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) which will search the entire sky to discover even more planets beyond our solar system.

SUMMARY:Community STEAM Evening
DESCRIPTION:Our community science night strives to change the way students\, families and our community think about science and technology. The night is designed to provide a non-threatening environment for families to explore the importance of STEAM in our everyday lives. All students\, families and friends are invited\, along with our immediate community to participate in our Community Family STEAM Evening. \nIn our newly developed Maker Space hosting a bridge building challenge focusing on the choice of material verses pricing. Participants will be asked to build a bridge to span a 40cm gap with only the tokens they are given on the way in. \nWithin our Years 5/6 area there will be a focus on an aerial repopulation strategy. In this area you are asked to develop a way to get your chosen animal (plastic toy) to the island (sand patch) with the smallest amount of damage to allow for repopulation in the area. \nThe visual arts space will host an area to design your very own detailed diagrams of Rube Goldburg inventions. Our lab will be filled with microscopes to investigate the wonders of entomology. \nA sustainability hub will encourage people to rethink their everyday choices and how they affect the future of our earth. Then finally\, in the Jobs Of The Future space they will be immersed in the endless possibilities of coding and the joy of spheros. \nThree Parrot MAMBO drones will also be available for families to experience.
