SUMMARY:Fizzics Liquid Nitrogen Show - Leongatha Library
DESCRIPTION:Fizzics – Liquid Nitrogen Show – is an event hosted by Fizzics Education. The show demonstrates phase changes\, expansion\, contraction\, basic cell theory\, air pressure\, and the weather. \nFeatured experiments include lid launcher\, ball smasher\, liquid nitrogen sprinkler\, frozen bubbles\, fog breath\, cool lasers\, cooling circuits and levitating magnets. \nThe shows allow up to 60 children through demonstration to find out: \n\nHow solids\, liquids and gases change when rapidly heated and cooled.\nWhat happens to living things if they are frozen?\nHow can Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion explain a liquid nitrogen sprinkler?\nWhat is the Leidenfrost effect?

SUMMARY:The Insect Apocalypse - save them save humankind
DESCRIPTION:Learn about using science in your garden to save the planet. Due to climate change our world faces mass extinctions of our smallest animals – insects. So\, who cares? Surely\, we are better off without flies\, mosquitoes\, spiders and ugh! bugs. Not so – each tiny insect plays a vital role. \nJoin our Space Science expert Lachlan Thompson for a talk and Bug Safari. Learn about using science in your garden to save the planet. Due to climate change our world faces mass extinctions of our smallest animals – insects. So\, who cares? Surely\, we are better off without flies\, mosquitos\, spiders and ugh! bugs. Not so – each tiny insect plays a vital role in the health of our gardens\, food crops. Ultimately healthy bugs equal healthy food for us. Bees we recognise as important for pollination yet they are rapidly declining and dying out. Human use of insecticides\, plastics and other chemicals are partly to blame. \nWhat are our options? How can each of us help these tiny warriors for good food crops? Who lives in our garden and where? What can I do to help bugs live in my yard and help the environment without the bugs annoying me? Join Professor Thompson in our science week talk to find who and what lives in your garden why we need them and how to help them. \nTalk and activities can be used towards Scouts World Conservation Badge.

SUMMARY:The Universe and the Future of Space
DESCRIPTION:In the past few decades\, rapid progress in technology has led to a complete change in our view of the Universe. In the next few decades\, this will change even more as we become an inter-planetary species. \nDr Brad Tucker will talk about some of these discoveries\, from planets around other stars\, to exploring the Universe and maybe even visiting other planets\, and show we are now turning science fiction into reality. \nDr Brad Tucker is an Astrophysicist/Cosmologist\, and currently a Research Fellow at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics\, Mt. Stromlo Observatory and the National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science at ANU. Brad received Bachelor’s degrees in Physics\, Philosophy\, and Theology from the University of Notre Dame. He then undertook a PhD at Mt. Stromlo Observatory at the Australian National University. \nHe is currently working on projects trying to discover the true nature of dark energy\, the mysterious substance causing the accelerating expansion of the Universe\, which makes up 70% of the Universe. He’s one of the leads of the Kepler Extra-Galactic Survey\, a Kepler Space Telescope Key Program\, to understand why and how stars blow up. He is also leading a project to build a network of ultraviolet telescopes in the upper atmosphere\, which are being built at Mt. Stromlo\, a search to find Planet 9 – a hypothetical new planet on the edges of our Solar System\, as well as a new mission to capture and mine an asteroid.

SUMMARY:Dr Darlene Lim - NASA Geobiologist
DESCRIPTION:For centuries\, the red planet has fired our imaginations; composers\, authors\, poets and more have all offered their tributes to the bringer of war. \nNow\, science has brought us to the very cusp of visiting Mars. Getting there\, however\, is only half of the battle. When humans set foot on Mars\, what will they do? How will they explore? How will they survive? \nOver the past decade\, NASA teams have been working at analogs\, destinations on Earth that simulate Mars mission conditions\, to build capabilities for human and human-robotic missions to the Moon\, into deep space\, and on Mars. \nIn this talk\, Dr Darlene Lim shares her experiences working under simulated mission conditions in the Arctic\, the Antarctic\, and underwater where she has piloted submersibles as a scientist and explorer. \nTwo on-going NASA analog programs on which Dr Lim will focus are BASALT (Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains)\, and SUBSEA (Systematic Underwater Biogeochemical Science and Exploration Analog). These missions aim to solve a number of unique challenges that are not encountered during typical scientific field expeditions\, such as extreme environmental conditions and communication delays. Only once we have mastered these challenges can we walk among the red dunes of Mars. \nJoin us at this special event to uncover the secrets to exploring other planets\, hidden in the least hospitable parts of our own.

SUMMARY:Coffee in Space
DESCRIPTION:In a fishbowl-style public forum\, research scientists and coffee professional will roleplay how they would roast\, grind and extract quality coffee in the extremes of space. In an accompanying hands-on activity\, the public tastes and rates coffee prepared using systematically varying particle size distributions\, viewed through provided microscopes. The fishbowl is preceded by public lectures by scientists which summarise and extend the science behind coffee. \nThis event uses the light-hearted premise of making coffee in space to engage the public in the serious science and technology around space travel. The event’s activities emphasise the collaborative nature of scientific problem solving\, regional engagement\, and Science as a Human Endeavour.
