SUMMARY:Innovation & SMES - ideas to reality: business engagement with CRCs
DESCRIPTION:The engagement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) helps to build a culture of innovation\, and therefore increased productivity and global competitiveness through all levels of the Australian industry. \nCRCs are engines of innovation for Australia. An initiative of the Australian Government\, CRCs bring together the best minds from research and industry to work as a team. Together\, and driven by the needs of private\, public or community end-users\, CRCs turn research results into products\, services and technologies and address national priorities within a local and global context. \nIt is up to a CRC’s participants to decide on the approach which best suits their particular industry or sector.  (SMEs) are a major pathway for innovation because of their flexibility in taking up new opportunities; this flexibility can lead to an important role in commercialising or utilising the research outputs of a CRC. \nPresenters \n\nDr Tony Peacock\, CEO at CRC Association ‘CRC & CRC-P(Project) Programs’\nCameron van den Dungen\, CEO at Sleeptite ‘CRC-P Experience’\nIan Christensen\, Managing Director at iMOVE Australia ‘DURING CRC – Collaborating in CRC’\nBrett Carter\, Chief Executive Officer\, Cancer Therapeutics CRC ‘AFTER CRC – It’s over\, what’s next?’\nDavid Norman\, CEO at Future Fuels CRC Ltd ‘BEFORE CRC – Starts with an Idea’\n\n  \nBenefits of CRC Engagement for SMEs \n\ninvolvement with a CRC can be a cost-effective way to participate in and benefit from research that might otherwise be beyond their reach\nincreases opportunities to network with key players in the industry and in research institutions\ncan offer a wider understanding of cutting edge technology/new developments in a particular field\nincreases opportunities for training and professional development to facilitate the adoption of new processes\, new technologies\, new management practices\nenhances prospects to take market advantage of new developments\, improve productivity\, competitiveness and access to global supply chains\n\nSMEs as CRC Participants \nSMEs are participants in CRCs and engage with CRCs at different levels. In some situations\, SME participants have been able to make a significant contribution and commitment to the CRC\, in line with the level of engagement of other participants. More commonly\, SMEs have been engaged on a smaller scale level\, becoming involved with individual projects or for limited periods of time without taking on a major commitment to the broader governance and management of the CRC. SMEs can be research project service providers\, research end-users\, or a combination of both. \nSME Spin-off Companies as CRC Participants \nAs part of a CRC’s commercialisation and utilisation activities\, a company may be created or spun-off from a CRC to commercialise new intellectual property. If this commercialisation process is successful and creates a revenue stream\, the spun-off SME company may see value in itself becoming a CRC participant.

SUMMARY:Mission Mars: Adventures on Earth
DESCRIPTION:Dr Darlene Lim from NASA shares her experiences working under simulated mission conditions in the Arctic\, the Antarctic\, and underwater where she has piloted submersibles as a scientist and explorer. Only once we have mastered these challenges can we walk among the red dunes of Mars. \nJoin us at this special event to uncover the secrets to exploring other planets\, hidden in the least hospitable parts of our own. With international guest speaker Dr Darlene Lim from NASA. \nFor centuries\, the red planet has fired our imaginations; composers\, authors\, poets and more have all offered their tributes to the bringer of war. Now\, science has brought us to the very cusp of visiting Mars. Getting there\, however\, is only half of the battle. When humans set foot on Mars\, what will they do? How will they explore? How will they survive? \nOver the past decade\, NASA teams have been working at analogs\, destinations on Earth that simulate Mars mission conditions\, to build capabilities for human and human-robotic missions to the Moon\, into deep space\, and on Mars. In this talk\, Dr Darlene Lim shares her experiences working under simulated mission conditions in the Arctic\, the Antarctic\, and underwater where she has piloted submersibles as a scientist and explorer. \nTwo on-going NASA analog programs on which Dr Lim will focus are BASALT (Biologic Analog Science Associated with Lava Terrains)\, and SUBSEA (Systematic Underwater Biogeochemical Science and Exploration Analog). These missions aim to solve a number of unique challenges that are not encountered during typical scientific field expeditions\, such as extreme environmental conditions and communication delays. Only once we have mastered these challenges can we walk among the red dunes of Mars. \nTickets available online from 1 July.

SUMMARY:The Future of Plastic
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to campaigns like The War on Waste\, plastic has become public enemy number one. Plastic waste is indeed a global environmental – and potentially health – problem\, requiring us to change long-held wasteful habits\, alongside significant political will and innovative solutions. But what of the other side to plastic – its astonishing variety of form and uses\, from electronics to transport to buildings to emerging renewable energy solutions? Do we need to give plastic the flick for good or do we just need to be smarter about the kinds of plastics we produce\, and how\, where\, and what we use them for? \nWe are hosting panelists from a mix of backgrounds with expertise in key sub-themes of this\, including: \n\nThe long-term environmental impacts of plastic\nPotential solutions to the plastic waste problem\nNew and emerging plastics and applications\nHealth risks from plastics
