SUMMARY:Light Detectives
DESCRIPTION:As part of Science in the Park\, there will be demonstrations\, exhibits and talks throughout the day on all sorts of illuminating topics concerned with light\, rainbows and spectra and what you can deduce from them about the very building blocks of everything. \nEvery beam of light carries a unique signature that unlocks the hidden chemical building blocks of where it’s come from as surely as a fingerprint. By splitting and decoding the rainbow of light\, you can reveal the chemical elements nearby or at the other end of the Universe. \nAs part of this year’s Science In The Park event held at Coolart Wetlands\, there’ll be demonstrations\, exhibits and talks throughout the day by the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society on all sorts of topics to do with light\, spectra\, the chemical elements of the periodic table\, astronomy and more. All done in collaboration with PrimeSCI!\, Coolart Wetlands and Homestead\, National Science Week and RSV/Inspiring Australia. \nIf you’ve wondered what we’re made of\, we hope to shed a little light on it. \nAdditional details:\nThe venue is in regional/rural Victoria and is entered on the west side of Lord Somers Road. Drive carefully through the park\, with the possibility of encountering wildlife. Park and check in at the visitors centre.

SUMMARY:Eggs Alive!
DESCRIPTION:Kangaroo Flat Library (Goldfields Libraries) is excited to announce that for National Science Week from the 13 – 21 August we are presenting “Eggs Alive!” Goldfields Libraries is a successful SEED grant winner and would like to share this whole experiment with the community. \nWith the money from the SEED grant\, Kangaroo Flat Library was able to purchase an incubator and brooder. The “Eggs Alive!” project will hatch fertilised chicken eggs in a see-through incubator at Kangaroo Flat Library during National Science Week. \nThe newly hatched chicks will then be kept in a brooder under a heat lamp in the Library for just over a week\, allowing the public to learn about the scientific aspects of the life cycle of chickens by observing\, discussing and supervised holding of the chicks during opening hours. \nThe actual hatching will be filmed in time-lapse\, which will then be shown on a loop near the chicks during this time\, allowing people to see the hatching occurring if they missed it. \nOn Wednesday 15 August at 2pm we have a guest speaker from the Bendigo Poultry Club\, Graeme Smith. Graeme is a poultry breeder of more than 48 years and is an “All Breeds” poultry judge for chicken exhibitions. Graeme will bring in a couple of adult birds for everyone to have a look at during his chat. He will discuss “showing birds”\, rare breeds and how old breeds are being re-established through genetics and science\, and general care and wellbeing of poultry. Any queries or questions by the public are welcomed at this informal session. \nWe hope with this experiment the community will learn more about poultry and the different sciences that are involved with hatching eggs such as biology (the life cycle of a chicken)\, climate (setting the temperature and incubator humidity) and Ecology and Agriculture (the benefits of eggs and meat and reduction in kitchen waste). \nStorytimes during National Science Week will have a special chicken-inspired theme and people can also browse our poultry-themed library items on display. Kangaroo Flat Library staff can also provide feedback on the whole egg incubation process to people who might be interested in trying to hatch eggs themselves!

SUMMARY:Truth is Stranger than Science Fiction - a NASA Scientist Tells
DESCRIPTION:People speculated about the existence of planets orbiting other Suns for hundreds if not thousands of years before they were finally confirmed. That gap left a lot of time for science fiction writers to invent their own words – mysterious planets with exotic landscapes\, orbiting alien star systems. When our technology finally caught up with our imaginations\, what we found was even more extraordinary than we had imagined. As science curator at the NASA Exoplanet Archive\, Dr Jessie Christiansen will take you on a tour of some of the more fantastic exoplanet discoveries\, including some famous\, fan-favourite fictional planets brought to life. \nAstrophysicist Dr Jessie Christiansen has been called the “Tomb Raider of exoplanet research”. Working at the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at Caltech\, Jessie searchers for\, studies and catalogues extrasolar planets – plants orbiting other stars. Her main research focuses on using the thousands of exoplanets found by the NASA Kepler mission to determine how common Earth-like planets might be in our galaxy. She is currently working on the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) which will search the entire sky to discover even more planets beyond our solar system.

SUMMARY:NASA's Planet Hunters
DESCRIPTION:This National Science Week\, join NASA scientist Dr Jessie Christensen to hear about the Kepler and Cassini missions. She’ll share stories of searching for planets beyond our solar system\, and how these missions have changed our view of ourselves. \nAfter 13 years orbiting Saturn\, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft dived into the planet’s atmosphere last September. The Kepler Space Telescope\, which has been discovering planets around other stars\, will run out of fuel sometime this year. \nThis special event celebrates these two big missions and their extraordinary contribution to our expanding knowledge of our universe. We know now planets around other stars\, even habitable ones\, are far more common than previously thought\, and some of the moons of Saturn may even host life.

SUMMARY:Science Festival - The Science of Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:Presented by A/Prof Mark Quigley and Dr Jeremy Silver from the School of Earth Sciences. \nScience has the potential to assist in resolving many of the largest challenges facing contemporary society. However\, relevant science is not always used to inform public opinion and decision-making. Is this because scientists do not communicate effectively to those who might seek to use their data and knowledge? Or because the general public and leaders choose to prioritise other inputs? \nIn this talk we will discuss our new research on science communication\, including objective measures of how effectively scientists communicate and how science utility might influence our opinions of our political leaders. The scope of this talk will range from science communication in the aftermath of natural disasters to quantitative analysis of how U.S. Presidents use science in their public messaging. \nSee the full list of events for Science Festival.
