SUMMARY:How does hunger influence our behaviour?
DESCRIPTION:Ever felt ‘hangry’ when you get hungry? \nThe drive to eat is essential for survival. Hunger-sensing neurons in our brains control our food intake to ensure we have enough energy for our day-to-day activities. However\, these neurons also influence broader behaviours such as anxiety\, fear\, motivation and learning. \nRachel Clarke from Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute will discuss the science of how the brain responds to hunger and some of the ways this might impact our behaviour at a free talk at the Library during Science Week.

SUMMARY:Humans 2.0
DESCRIPTION:INVENT.   EVOLVE.   DECIDE. \nAugmented brains and bodies\, or a return to nature? Cyber or solar? Humans 2.0 – what is the future of our species?\n\nWearables\, transplantables\, cognitive enhancement\, robot assistants\, genetic engineering and nanotechnology. In this speculative story telling event\, how will you define what is human\, and decide what is dead or alive? \nHear about new modes of communication\, sports and transport which may be available to future humans. Augment yourself using the latest in AR technology\, dance off with artificial intelligence\, and experience new visual phenomena only perceivable using virtual reality. \nCheck out future artefacts and prototypes while grabbing a drink at the psi-bar. Speak with experts to invent your own stories\, ponder our place in an increasingly automated world\, and discover how we could feed the planet’s ever increasing human population. \nWill we enter a new age of sustainability and loving connection with the natural world while grappling with climate change? Dig in the soil and listen to the rivers to glimpse possible neo-sustainable and naturophilic communities of tomorrow. \nInspired by the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein\, Humans 2.0 invites audiences to imagine beyond Frankenstein’s monster to what it will mean to be human in the next century. \nHumans 2.0 is presented by the Victorian Coordinating Committee for National Science Week and The Royal Society of Victoria\, and supported by Phoria. \nThis is a free event\, but registrations are essential. \n \nPowered by Eventbrite

SUMMARY:FACT VS FICTION: What does the future hold?
DESCRIPTION:The future is with us now. What does it hold for us? Is it inevitable or do we have an active role to play in shaping a future that will nurture human existence and a healthy planet? \nMuch science fiction has predicted a life that for us is now common place. How do these writers now see our existence and what is the relationship then between science fact and science fiction? \nTwo extraordinary women\, sci fi writer Isobelle Carmody and CSIRO Senior Economist Katherine Wynn\, share their predictions for our future and explore the relationship between science fact and fiction. \nBookings: 1300 462 542 or online \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Future of Space Travel
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Torque and Sisters in Science present an exciting panel discussion on a topic that humans have puzzled over for centuries: space exploration. What are we doing in space? What might we find? What are the consequences? And\, how can we best collaborate as we move further into the unknown? \nFor National Science Week Let’s Torque and Sisters in Science are joining forces to deliver an exciting panel discussion on a topic that humans have puzzled over for centuries: space exploration. \nWe’ll be asking what humans are doing in space currently\, why we’re there\, and what we might find. We’ll ponder the implications of humanity entering space and visiting other planets\, and weigh up the pros and cons in an interactive dialogue. We’ll also discuss the importance of collaboration in space exploration\, why diversity makes us more effective and how we can communicate across the globe to include everyone in the future of space travel. \nAbout the organisers\nLet’s Torque is a student-run undergraduate public speaking competition in which participants deliver a talk on a science\, technology\, engineering\, mathematics or medicine (STEMM) idea and its potential impact on society. \nSisters in Science is a student-run organisation which aims to connect high school aged girls with women who work in STEMM fields.
