SUMMARY:STEM Reading and Design Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Students will read a book (fiction or non-fiction) related to STEM and do one of the following inspired by the book they have read: \n\nplan and carry out an experiment; or\nplan and build an invention.\n\nStudents will present their findings/invention to the school community during lunchtime and to parents and the wider community during NationalScience Week. This project allows students to conduct science and engineering activities beyond the usual science program. Students with have full ownership over their project and a choice in the activity they will do. \nReading about STEM in various contexts and visiting the displays of their peers brings the attention of the students to the relevance of science to everyday life. By displaying their work\, they do the same for the teachers\, parents and wider community members.

SUMMARY:Sea Life Melbourne presents Weedy Sea Dragons
DESCRIPTION:SEA LIFE Melbourne is sharing the secrets of Victoria’s official marine faunal emblem\, the weedy sea dragon\, Thursday 16 August as part of National Science Week. \nA special talk\, free with entry to SEA LIFE Melbourne\, will focus on the aquarium’s breeding program – one of the most successful in the world. \nThe Weedy sea dragon is a unique animal\, only found in the waters surrounding southern Australia. These stunningly colourful and dreamlike creatures are the marine emblem of Victoria. Their vibrant colours and peculiar leaf like body shape add to their unique appeal. \nWeedy sea dragons are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of endangered species with habitat loss being the key issue for this species.  With limited research done it is hard to estimate the exact number of Weedy sea dragons in the wild hence the importance of captive breeding programs to learn more about them and to ensure the long term survival of the species. \nFor more information or to purchase tickets\, please visit: https://www.melbourneaquarium.com.au/

SUMMARY:Waste Away - The Future of Garbage: EPA's 2018 National Science Week Panel
DESCRIPTION:EPA is celebrating National Science Week by hosting its third annual panel event. This year’s topic is Waste away – the future of garbage. EPA has gathered together a panel of experts to discuss the future of waste. Is it truly waste or is it a resource? \nWaste has been a hot topic for Australia and Victoria over the last 18 months. Public debate has surrounded: \n\nHow we can reduce our waste at home\nHow business can assist in reducing waste\, which has led to a plastic bag ban in Victoria and many bars banning plastic straws\nWaste stockpiling in Victoria\nChina banning recycling imports\nHow we can repurpose waste\, such as waste to energy plants or using waste to make roads.\n\nEPA has gathered together a panel of experts to discuss the future of waste. This is a unique opportunity to hear from our panel and to ask questions about waste opportunities and technologies. Is it truly waste or is it a resource? How can science be used to solve Australia’s waste problem? \nOur panel includes: \n\nRuby Chan\, Inventor of ‘Moducware’\nMark Glover\, Director and CEO of Renewable Carbon\nBarry Sullivan\, Business Development Manager\, Renewables Downer Utilities Australia\nDr Trevor Thornton\, Lecturer\, School of Life and Environmental Sciences\, Deakin\n\nThe panel discussion will be directed by the questions posed by the audience\, both live and web-stream. \nRegister now to join the live audience for this lively debate! \nCan’t make it to the live event? You can join the web-stream\, click here to register for the webstream!

SUMMARY:Innovation Hub - Try Out Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come along and participate in a hands on tour of the new Innovation Hub. You will get to use the new digital fabrication equipment including 3D printers\, a laser cutter\, CNC router\, vacuum forming machine and a t-shirt printer. \nOur Story \nIn our endeavour to develop a new digital fabrication space\, we looked to the worldwide Maker Movement. We found it resonated with our core business values of a collaborative working space for students\, local business\, industry and the community at large. \nDigital disruption\, Industry 4.0\, the Internet of Things and the need to be responsive to product development and lead times were all considered when designing the GOTAFE Innovation Hub. \nWe are proud to provide a start up space where people can develop ideas from concepts through to the design\, construction and prototyping phases combined with web page design and marketing. \nOur vision is of a one stop shop where people from all walks of life can come together to learn and grow in a safe non-threatening space.

SUMMARY:A new view of life: Celebrating the end of Kepler and Cassini\, and start of Tess
DESCRIPTION:NASA is set to land in Mount Martha for National Science Week\, with two inspiring scientists from the Cassini and Kepler planetary spacecraft missions delivering the annual Science Week public lecture about the learnings so far and the implications for the future. \nTwo NASA mission scientists are on course for Victoria\, bringing Saturn to the Gold Fields\, Titan to the CBD\, and a glimpse of the active hunt for new worlds to the south-east and Peninsula regions of the state. \nWith tantalising prospects of life being found elsewhere in our own solar system\, these two inspiring scientists are extending the search further afield by hunting for new planets around other stars in the sky. \nThe Kepler Space Telescope has been fervently scanning the heavens for over nine years now\, and its onboard fuel supply is about to run out\, ending its life.  In April this year\, NASA launched a successor spacecraft mission called TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) and it promises to bring the latest and most sensitive technology to bear in the search for other Earth-like worlds elsewhere in our galaxy. \nDr. Megan Bedell and Dr. Ben Montet will bring you to the forefront of humanity’s search for other worlds and the implications of what it could mean for all of us. \nWhat did we learn from the Cassini spacecraft’s 13 years with Saturn? How did it feel to watch Cassini’s “death dive” into Saturn’s atmosphere last year? What makes the moon Titan Earth-like?  How did scientists discover active\, icy plumes on the moon Enceladus? What have we learned from the hundreds of planets discovered by the orbiting Kepler Space Telescope? How will the information beamed back to Earth continue to advance science once Kepler runs out of fuel this year? \nAudiences will hear from visiting NASA scientists from the Cassini and Kepler missions at a series of events in Victoria. With the announcement of Australia’s very own space agency\, it’s a timely look at the international context of our contribution to furthering humanity’s understanding of the Universe. \nThis talk is the annual National Science Week public lecture hosted by the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society as part of their monthly meeting at the Briars Astronomy Centre in regional south-eastern Victoria. \nMembers of the public are cordially invited to attend this community event. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. \nThe venue is marked on Google Maps and on the Melways at map reference 151/E1.

SUMMARY:The Future of Space Travel
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Torque and Sisters in Science present an exciting panel discussion on a topic that humans have puzzled over for centuries: space exploration. What are we doing in space? What might we find? What are the consequences? And\, how can we best collaborate as we move further into the unknown? \nFor National Science Week Let’s Torque and Sisters in Science are joining forces to deliver an exciting panel discussion on a topic that humans have puzzled over for centuries: space exploration. \nWe’ll be asking what humans are doing in space currently\, why we’re there\, and what we might find. We’ll ponder the implications of humanity entering space and visiting other planets\, and weigh up the pros and cons in an interactive dialogue. We’ll also discuss the importance of collaboration in space exploration\, why diversity makes us more effective and how we can communicate across the globe to include everyone in the future of space travel. \nAbout the organisers\nLet’s Torque is a student-run undergraduate public speaking competition in which participants deliver a talk on a science\, technology\, engineering\, mathematics or medicine (STEMM) idea and its potential impact on society. \nSisters in Science is a student-run organisation which aims to connect high school aged girls with women who work in STEMM fields.
