SUMMARY:Intersection of Science and Experimental Art
DESCRIPTION:A showcase event investigating the intersections of Science and Experimental Arts Practice will be held at Geelong within the Waurn Ponds Library meeting space. The performance and workshop will be followed with a chance for the audience to meet with the performers and carry this momentum in the creation of an inspiring space for discussion. Performances will programmed within the scope of areas such as technology (both science and art platforms)\, acoustic ecology and neuroscience. Neurologist and comedian David Farmer will MC the event and add a comedic look at his world of neuroscience. \nMusical performance/workshop \nVicki Hallett – Acoustic Ecology on the African Continent \nJem Savage – Arduino\, Max/MSP and the Isomorphic Pitch Shifting Interface \nDavid Farmer is a Scottish Neuroscientist based at the Florey Institute in Melbourne and is most knowledgeable about the brainstem. This is the area of the brain that regulates things like your heart rate and your blood pressure. It also generates the rhythm of your breathing. Scientists that study fancy things like consciousness would call this ‘housekeeping’ but David calls it ‘why you are not dead’. \nDavid is a passionate public speaker and advocate for science. His recently debuted show ‘Why You’re Not Dead Yet’ enjoyed a sell-out run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He won the Victorian state heat (also clinching the people’s choice award) at the ‘FameLab’ competition after delivering a 3 minute talk on his research to a lay audience. He was named runner up at the Australian National Final. He has since made radio appearances on ABC 774 (Lindy Burns\, Libby Gore) and ABC 720 (Gillian O’Shaughnessy)\, RRR’s Einstein-A-Go-Go\, the Sci-Gasm podcast\, Diffusion Science Radio and was once interviewed by comedian Colin Lane for his web-series of ‘Cup of Tea with Col’. \n

SUMMARY:Three Years of Winter: The (Scientific) Story Behind Shelley's Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:“It was a dark and stormy night…” …hold on a minute\, let’s ditch this cliched horror story! It was actually a hot and tropical April in 1815\, prior to the terror that would engulf the inhabitants of Sumbawa\, Indonesia. \nIn this gothic tale that weaves art and science\, Monash University’s Dr James Driscoll will focus on the geological and climatic catastrophe that created the conditions for the writing of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley\, three years later and half a world away. \nWe’ll also explore the science of catastrophic volcanic eruptions and comment on the present volcanic hazards of Victoria.

SUMMARY:Is your brain lying to you?
DESCRIPTION:Our brains learn about the outside world through our senses. But our senses aren’t always to be trusted. Ever wondered why the wheels on cars sometimes appear to spin backwards? Or why the internet can’t seem to agree on what colour ‘The Dress’ is? If you’ve ever wondered why we are so susceptible to visual illusions\, and what is actually happening in our brains when we view them\, come along to this talk to find out for yourself. \nBrian Oakley from Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute will talk about his recent research on the brain at a free talk at the Library during National Science Week 2018.

SUMMARY:STEM Reading and Design Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Students will read a book (fiction or non-fiction) related to STEM and do one of the following inspired by the book they have read: \n\nplan and carry out an experiment; or\nplan and build an invention.\n\nStudents will present their findings/invention to the school community during lunchtime and to parents and the wider community during NationalScience Week. This project allows students to conduct science and engineering activities beyond the usual science program. Students with have full ownership over their project and a choice in the activity they will do. \nReading about STEM in various contexts and visiting the displays of their peers brings the attention of the students to the relevance of science to everyday life. By displaying their work\, they do the same for the teachers\, parents and wider community members.

SUMMARY:Sea Life Melbourne presents Weedy Sea Dragons
DESCRIPTION:SEA LIFE Melbourne is sharing the secrets of Victoria’s official marine faunal emblem\, the weedy sea dragon\, Thursday 16 August as part of National Science Week. \nA special talk\, free with entry to SEA LIFE Melbourne\, will focus on the aquarium’s breeding program – one of the most successful in the world. \nThe Weedy sea dragon is a unique animal\, only found in the waters surrounding southern Australia. These stunningly colourful and dreamlike creatures are the marine emblem of Victoria. Their vibrant colours and peculiar leaf like body shape add to their unique appeal. \nWeedy sea dragons are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of endangered species with habitat loss being the key issue for this species.  With limited research done it is hard to estimate the exact number of Weedy sea dragons in the wild hence the importance of captive breeding programs to learn more about them and to ensure the long term survival of the species. \nFor more information or to purchase tickets\, please visit: https://www.melbourneaquarium.com.au/

SUMMARY:Waste Away - The Future of Garbage: EPA's 2018 National Science Week Panel
DESCRIPTION:EPA is celebrating National Science Week by hosting its third annual panel event. This year’s topic is Waste away – the future of garbage. EPA has gathered together a panel of experts to discuss the future of waste. Is it truly waste or is it a resource? \nWaste has been a hot topic for Australia and Victoria over the last 18 months. Public debate has surrounded: \n\nHow we can reduce our waste at home\nHow business can assist in reducing waste\, which has led to a plastic bag ban in Victoria and many bars banning plastic straws\nWaste stockpiling in Victoria\nChina banning recycling imports\nHow we can repurpose waste\, such as waste to energy plants or using waste to make roads.\n\nEPA has gathered together a panel of experts to discuss the future of waste. This is a unique opportunity to hear from our panel and to ask questions about waste opportunities and technologies. Is it truly waste or is it a resource? How can science be used to solve Australia’s waste problem? \nOur panel includes: \n\nRuby Chan\, Inventor of ‘Moducware’\nMark Glover\, Director and CEO of Renewable Carbon\nBarry Sullivan\, Business Development Manager\, Renewables Downer Utilities Australia\nDr Trevor Thornton\, Lecturer\, School of Life and Environmental Sciences\, Deakin\n\nThe panel discussion will be directed by the questions posed by the audience\, both live and web-stream. \nRegister now to join the live audience for this lively debate! \nCan’t make it to the live event? You can join the web-stream\, click here to register for the webstream!

SUMMARY:Innovation Hub - Try Out Tour
DESCRIPTION:Come along and participate in a hands on tour of the new Innovation Hub. You will get to use the new digital fabrication equipment including 3D printers\, a laser cutter\, CNC router\, vacuum forming machine and a t-shirt printer. \nOur Story \nIn our endeavour to develop a new digital fabrication space\, we looked to the worldwide Maker Movement. We found it resonated with our core business values of a collaborative working space for students\, local business\, industry and the community at large. \nDigital disruption\, Industry 4.0\, the Internet of Things and the need to be responsive to product development and lead times were all considered when designing the GOTAFE Innovation Hub. \nWe are proud to provide a start up space where people can develop ideas from concepts through to the design\, construction and prototyping phases combined with web page design and marketing. \nOur vision is of a one stop shop where people from all walks of life can come together to learn and grow in a safe non-threatening space.

SUMMARY:Life\, Magnified: Using light microscopy to investigate biology and disease
DESCRIPTION:A picture tells a thousand words! Come and learn about the smallest details of the human body and how it can all go wrong. Visit research labs\, meet young researchers as they take you through their experiments and use our microscopes to make your own images to take home with you. \nJoin us to learn how researchers are using light microscopy to investigate the biology of the body and how diseases are caused. Light microscopy can produce some wonderful images\, but they can also tell us a lot about what we are interested in. After all – A picture tells a thousand words! \nThis event\, hosted by the at the Bio21 Institute at the University of Melbourne\, follows a scientific experiment from start to finish through a series of hands-on workstations. These workstations include: \n\na visit to active research labs\nstudents learn about the structures of the cell and how we can visualise them\nstudents get to use a $1 million microscope\nstudents take their own images and print them out to take home.\npresentations from young researchers as they take students through the design\, implementation and interpretation of their experiments.\n\nThis event is aimed at Year 9 & 10 students and is limited to groups of 10 students per teacher. Schools may arrange multiple groups\, as long at the 10:1 ratio is maintained.

SUMMARY:Go Girl Go for IT
DESCRIPTION:A free expo provided by the Vic ICT for Women for school girls from Years 5 to 12\, to identify all the opportunities available to them if they choose a career in technology. \nThe day provides a range of interactive\, innovative and inspiring workshops and presentations highlighting a variety of roles\, skills and opportunities included in the field of technology. Buses are also subsidised so that schools are not disadvantaged if they can not afford the transport. This stops girls for missing out. \nThe whole event is sponsored and we have industry leaders supporting and presenting on the day. Teachers are also supported with sessions provided to identify support available to them as well. Go Girl also provides an avenue for many other NFP organisations\, who support the same values to be linked with the schools. Groups such as RoboGals\, Girl Geek Academy\, Code the Future\, Girls who Code\, Flying Robot School and more. \nA truly unique and sensational program that is helping to develop a pipeline for girls and women in technology. This program is only run every second year so don’t miss out!
