SUMMARY:Learn how science works with Mighty Maggots
DESCRIPTION:Become a mini-scientist in this hands-on workshop. Children will experiment with maggots to form and test a hypothesis before making some incredible maggot artwork with Dr Melanie Thompson. \nDuring the session\, participants will learn how to develop and test a hypothesis using our Mighty Maggots and a selection of foods. Participants will be asked to hypothesise or ‘guess’ which of the three prospective food choices the Mighty Maggots would like the best. \nChildren are then given a plate of food and three maggots to start their experiment. The results are then recorded and compared to the original hypotheses. Who was right? Which maggots were fastest? \nParticipants will then use food dye\, maggots and blotting paper to create their very own piece of marvellous Mighty Maggot art to take home. \nPlease note- no maggots are harmed during this program and all safety measures are followed.

SUMMARY:Ballarat International Foto Biennale to the Moon and Back @ The Ballarat Municipal Observatory
DESCRIPTION:To the Moon and Back takes visitors on an educational and inspirational trip to the moon\, where visitors can participate in creative moon themed sun-print and light-box activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing. \n  \nThe Ballarat International Foto Biennale presents two weekends of free activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon landing. \nChildren will learn about space travel and science while being creative with photography. \nVisitors can discover how astronauts live in space and create a layered light box image incorporating astronauts and space scenery\, or images of objects they would take with them on a trip to the Moon – a toothbrush\, favourite book or toy\, or even a dog. Once completed take a photograph and make another. \nThe lunar theme continues in a sun print activity incorporating Moon related stencilled images. Using a non-toxic cyanotype paper\, participants will watch as their image is exposed to UV light (ie. the Sun) resulting in a clever silhouetted image on a blue background to take home. \nThe events run alongside Ballarat Municipal Observatory Science Week activities and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale exhibition To the Moon and Back. \nTake this opportunity to visit this historic observatory\, and browse the buildings over the opening weekend of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale\, when audiences can view the free exhibition To the Moon and Back\, featuring work by international photographic artists exploring the continued relevance of the historic 1969 lunar landing and its lasting photographic legacy. \nBookings required for groups of 6 or more. \n10am – 3pm\, 17-18 and 24-25 August.\n \nNote: Sunprints require UV light and will be replaced by an alternate activity in the case of wet weather.

SUMMARY:BLUE - Community Screening
DESCRIPTION:By 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. Our FREE community screening of BLUE takes us on a provocative journey into the ocean realm. We meet those who are defending habitats\, campaigning for smarter fishing\, combating marine pollution and fighting for the protection of species. \n  \nWe are hosting a FREE community screening of BLUE to challenge our communities to think about what they can do to help our oceans. \nFilmed around the world\, BLUE is an Australian documentary that tells the story about the changes that are happening to our ocean and its marine life. It follows the lives of ordinary people doing extraordinary work to protect our ocean. Beautifully crafted\, BLUE is deeply moving with a message that’s very clear: we need to act NOW to protect our most precious resource. The film is a call to arms focusing on people power. \nSomething we can all do is to replace disposable living with re-useable living – bring your own coffee cup\, say no to single use plastic bags and stop using disposable cutlery and straws. Small things that we can all do that cumulatively will have a big difference. \nTea/coffee and supper available. Local stalls and information on great local initiatives\, including Boomerang bags and beeswax wraps.

SUMMARY:Curious Kids' Night - It's all about STEAM
DESCRIPTION:A fun and  engaging program to introduce young children and their families to the different aspects of STEAM. Exploring different streams of science with a variety of resources and materials. We want children to investigate the resources available on the night\, develop an idea\, design\, build and then have fun with their families as they interact with their creation. Our event would be focussed on children and their families\, in particular fathers\, as they are not the traditional visitors to the library for regular children’s events. \nThe key elements of event would be electronics and engineering. \nElectronics – done by using squishy circuits which uses playdough as a circuit medium. This challenge will also involve the arts as children use their imagination to create a playdough structure to make a circuit. \nEngineering – This activity will be accessible to all age groups through the use of kickbricks for younger children and Planks for other children. Both these resources are age appropriate ways of allowing children to explore engineering by building. Challenges for children will be organised to encorgae them to work both on their own and collaboratively across the group. \nRobotics – using existing sphero robots to learn simple programming and participate in some robotic challenges.

SUMMARY:Learn how science works with Might Maggots

SUMMARY:They Walk Among Us
DESCRIPTION:They’re right under our noses yet we don’t notice them. Some just listen but others might be transmitting as you read this\, perhaps even in code. They might not use the internet or phone to communicate with each other\, and they’re often found in backyard shacks. \nHave you noticed strange antennae as you walk around your neighbourhood? Should you be afraid? \nWell\, they’re not quite the aliens of a B-grade 1960s movie\, but they are a subculture of intelligent beings that is relatively invisible to most of us. \nThese are the HAM radio enthusiasts who communicate across the world by high frequency (short wave) radio by bouncing signals off the ionosphere. Some have even been known to bounce them off the Moon. \nRadio and astronomy have gone hand-in-hand for a very long time\, with Australia home to some of the most impressive radiotelescopes in the world. But there are more humble rigs as well in amateur hands. \nFor the anniversary of the first Moon walk\, the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society has been granted the special licence to use the one-off anniversary radio call sign VI3MOON from July 16-24. \nTo discover more\, keep an ear open on the airwaves by visiting our Events page for updates from time to time. \nOver.

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Professor Peter Doherty
DESCRIPTION:Professor Peter Doherty was awarded Australian of the year in 1997 and is the first person with a Veterinary qualification to win a Nobel Prize. He has authored several books including The Beginners Guide to Winning a Nobel Prize\, The Knowledge Wars and the Incidental Tourist. \n  \n  \nPeter Doherty shared the 1996 Nobel Medicine Prize with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel\, for their discoveries about transplantation and “killer” T cell-mediated immunity\, an understanding that is currently translating into new cancer treatments. \nThe first veterinarian to win a Nobel\, he was Australian of the Year in 1997. Still active in research on immunity to influenza\, he commutes between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital\, Memphis and the Peter Doherty Institute at the University of Melbourne\, where he now spends most of his professional time. \nApart from his scientific output that can be found on PubMed\, he is the author of several “lay” books\, including A Light History of Hot Air\, The Beginners Guide to Winning the Nobel Prize\, Sentinel Chickens: What Birds Tell us About our Health and our World and Pandemics: What Everyone Needs to Know. \nPassionate about promoting an evidence-based view of reality\, his most recent book The Knowledge Wars is a “warts and all” view of science for non-scientists\, even for people who don’t like science. It also suggests how any thoughtful citizen can bypass the facile propagandists and probe the scientific evidence for and against some of the big issues\, like climate change or GM foods. \n

SUMMARY:Saving Species with Citizen Science
DESCRIPTION:Anyone can contribute to science\, regardless of their age or experience. \nJoin BioQuisitive and Science For All at Monash Tech School for this hands on workshop about how everyday citizens are working to protect critically endangered species using DNA and other advanced technologies. \nScience For All and BioQuisitive are currently monitoring three endangered species\, one of which is the Leadbeater Possum\, the focus of this workshop. Using a variety of different technologies\, they’re training members of the public to work like a forensics team; going out into the field\, collecting samples\, and using their mobile lab to analyse the results. Working with partners such as the Australian National University\, they’re identifying where these possums live in order to help map out their homes and inform evidence-based policies for protecting these species and their habitats. These technologies include thermal imaging cameras\, DNA thermal cyclers\, centrifuges\, and more. \nObservation and data collection is the core of the scientific method. Science for All has values which recognise that knowledge takes many forms – this includes people who are subject area experts\, people with traditional\, indigenous or local knowledge\, and those with big dreams and big ideas. All are welcome to this workshop\, no matter how much lab experience you have.
