SUMMARY:Taking our garden bugs to the Moon\, Mars\, and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Thompson on an interactive talk and exploration of taking bugs into space to help us live on the Moon and Mars. In 2003 Prof Thompson flew spiders and fruit flies on the NASA Space Shuttle in an experiment to see if bugs had the right stuff to help us live in space. On show will be samples of the experiments and space flown plants and seeds that were used to find out what sort of greenhouse plants an astronaut would be able to grow on Mars. \nFind out how is science used to find out which bug should be taken to Mars. What are the challenges preventing us from going to Moon or Mars today? Find out why are everyday garden insects important to our survival on the Moon and Mars? Learn how you can contribute to space research in your own garden.

SUMMARY:The Insect Apocalypse - save them save humankind
DESCRIPTION:Learn about using science in your garden to save the planet. Due to climate change our world faces mass extinctions of our smallest animals – insects. So\, who cares? Surely\, we are better off without flies\, mosquitoes\, spiders and ugh! bugs. Not so – each tiny insect plays a vital role. \nJoin our Space Science expert Lachlan Thompson for a talk and Bug Safari. Learn about using science in your garden to save the planet. Due to climate change our world faces mass extinctions of our smallest animals – insects. So\, who cares? Surely\, we are better off without flies\, mosquitos\, spiders and ugh! bugs. Not so – each tiny insect plays a vital role in the health of our gardens\, food crops. Ultimately healthy bugs equal healthy food for us. Bees we recognise as important for pollination yet they are rapidly declining and dying out. Human use of insecticides\, plastics and other chemicals are partly to blame. \nWhat are our options? How can each of us help these tiny warriors for good food crops? Who lives in our garden and where? What can I do to help bugs live in my yard and help the environment without the bugs annoying me? Join Professor Thompson in our science week talk to find who and what lives in your garden why we need them and how to help them. \nTalk and activities can be used towards Scouts World Conservation Badge.
