Lavers Hill Science Week Activity Day

Mixed age groups from Prep to Year 10 (11/12 if available) – divided into four groups. Not kinda kids. Parents to be invited in for the day and participate in activities.

Set up four activities in Periods 3, 4, 5, 6.  Each group to do every activity once, and rotate around.

Doing activities will require breaking into pairs or groups of 3-4 in each period.

Activities are as follows:

  • Construction Contest – to build the tallest stable structure from materials supplied (straws, cardboard tubes, string, tape etc). Measure the heights of the successful free standing structure. Tablulate the results.
  • It’s a small world after all – explore the history of microscopes, set up and demonstrate with a variety of objects to view. Include magnifying glasses, stereo and monocular microscopes, digital microscopes etc. Learn about the Biology of cells.
  • Chemistry – Make slime (something to take home) and oobleck.
  • Geology and fossils – examine specimens of rocks and minerals. Fossil bones hidden in a sand box to find. Make models of dinosaurs (buy kits). Make fossil casts using plaster of paris.
