Science-Writing Workshop

This two-day course in National Science Week (pre-registration essential) will teach scientists, technologists and engineers the essential skills and strategies needed to convey the fruits of their research to the media, government, research-funding bodies and the public.
Among other things, the comprehensive course will cover fundamental principles and “rules of the journalism game”, equipping participants with the confidence and media savvy required to project messages clearly and simply.
Hands-on training will be provided in preparing articles, features, media releases and illustrative material for multiple outlets, including in-house, local and international publications and the digital media.
In addition, the sessions will groom participants for science interviews by the print and broadcast media. Legal issues affecting researchers and the media will also be discussed.
Participants completing the course will acquire valuable skills, including those needed to liaise with journalists and prepare successful media releases.
Worked examples, reference materials, background notes and a certificate of completion will be provided.
