Sea Life Melbourne presents Weedy Sea Dragons

16 August 2018 @ 1:00 pm2:00 pm

Free

SEA LIFE Melbourne is sharing the secrets of Victoria’s official marine faunal emblem, the weedy sea dragon, Thursday 16 August as part of National Science Week.

A special talk, free with entry to SEA LIFE Melbourne, will focus on the aquarium’s breeding program – one of the most successful in the world.

The Weedy sea dragon is a unique animal, only found in the waters surrounding southern Australia. These stunningly colourful and dreamlike creatures are the marine emblem of Victoria. Their vibrant colours and peculiar leaf like body shape add to their unique appeal.

Weedy sea dragons are listed as ‘Near Threatened’ on the IUCN Red List of endangered species with habitat loss being the key issue for this species.  With limited research done it is hard to estimate the exact number of Weedy sea dragons in the wild hence the importance of captive breeding programs to learn more about them and to ensure the long term survival of the species.
