Join us and discover what a ‘carbon neutral’ world would be like and how are we going to achieve this. The link and solution between carbon emissions, climate change and a future of clean energy is through chemistry; from removing our dependence on fossil fuels that powers our modern society, the physical chemistry behind carbon…
Want to learn how to make a lava lamp, or see some elephant toothpaste? Come to Deer Park to create some crazy chemical reactions!
Have fun creating all sorts of slime to squish, stretch, probe, poke and play with.

Learn about the chemistry of colour with some fun and simple science experiements. We will be using ingredients that you can find at home or a supermarket. Bookings essential. For Ages 5+.
Exciton science is a cutting-edge area of science where chemistry, physics and (sometimes) biology meet. It looks at new ways of harnessing light and experiments with how we can make new types of solar cells and protect bank notes with anti-counterfeit light properties that haven’t before been seen. Come along to the University of Melbourne…
Watch chemicals react in a big way! See impressive colour changes, smell invisible gasses and hear some oh-mighty noises. Learn about the conversion of reactant molecules to products and the energy changes involved, all while watching shooting foam, hissing fire, and cool blue light. Reactive chemistry at its exciting best!
2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the periodic table of chemical elements. The Royal Australian Chemical Institute warmly invites you to join us to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table 2019 at our IYPT Expo. Did you know we need 75 elements to make a smartphone? At the IYPT you will be able…
Watch the science of using liquid nitrogen to instantly turn liquid into the creamiest ice cream. Demonstrations and ice cream giveaways. At 196 degrees below zero, handcraft unique flavours that are theatrically made right before your eyes, giving you the ultimate ice cream experience. Their staff members are specially trained to handle liquid nitrogen –…
Professor Veena Sahajwalla is revolutionising recycling science. Rather than take up arms against a sea of big polluters, Professor Sahajwalla approaches the problem as a commercial opportunity with real market value to help drive behaviour change. Last year her SMaRT centre opened the world’s first e-waste micro-factory to process old computers, phones, televisions, and all the electronic junk that ends up in landfill. The waste is sorted and dismantled by robots, then mined for its precious elements. Circuit boards are stripped of metals such as gold, copper and tin, while glass and plastic are converted to industrial-grade ceramics and plastic filaments for use in 3D printing. Join us to explore how repurposing the fundamental molecules and elements within post-consumer waste products is reinventing the way we treat - and perceive - these largely untapped commodities.
A fantastic opportunity for VCE Chemistry students to apply their understanding of functional groups, chirality and problem solving to the context of pharmacy and pharmacology. Come along and extend yourself in preparation for your exams and future in the health care and research sectors. This workshop is delivered by our current PhD students and aligns…
The Victorian Inspiring Australia program is a community-focused initiative led by the Royal Society of Victoria, in partnership with the Commonwealth Government and the State Government of Victoria.
We acknowledge the First Peoples of Victoria and the essential ancestral knowledge held, recovered and enacted by Elders. We acknowledge that this land and its millennia-old relationship with First Peoples was never ceded. We acknowledge the many injustices suffered by the knowledge keepers and Custodians of Country through the disrespectful actions and attitudes of early members of the Victorian scientific community. We express our sincere regret for the ignorance and bigotry of those who preceded us.
